Chapel Hill residents have two farmers’ markets to shop each week, Chapel Hill Farmers’ Market (the year-round market found in the University Mall area) and Southern Village Farmers’ Market in southern Chapel Hill. Southern Village is an “urbanist” community, where one finds commercial offices, retail shops and residential properties within walking distance of each other. At the center of the village is Main Street and The Green, where you’ll find a small farmers’ market (around ten vendors) Thursday afternoons, May through October.
Though not a large market (in terms of the number of vendors), the selection available on the afternoon I visited was ample. One could purchase Johnson’s Peaches, baked goods from Big Bundts & More, cheeses from Lindley Farms Creamery, and all varieties of summer produce from McAdams Farm, as well as those showy sunflowers. I found multi-colored eggs from Four Sisters (they specialize in heritage and rare breed chickens) and Valley View Farm beef too.
In addition to the weekly farmers’ market, other favorites found at Southern Village include Parlez Vous Crepe truck (usually on market days), the Lumina theater (one of the sponsors of the outdoor movies & music series on “The Green”) and a Weaver Street Market (just in case you need some item you can’t find at the farmers’ market).
Speaking of “The Green” at Southern Village, that’s the same green where you’ll find the upcoming TerraVITA Grand Tasting (Nov. 3rd)! As you can see, Southern Village offers convenient access to fresh, local foods and a lot of fun events for the whole family too.
