{Localista Picks} Nov 27 – Dec 3

Time for this week’s “Localista Picks” for your Eat~Play~Shop local consideration. Each week I highlight a few area activities and local businesses you might want to consider fitting into your very busy agenda (they’ll be worth the time. I promise). So, without further ado, here’s all the latest:

Eat Local

With the holiday this week, you probably have eating local covered, right? Well, I’ll go light on the {Eat Local} options this week. But in case you tire of Thanksgiving leftovers before the week’s end, the Durham version of The Pit BBQ will be open all week!

Play Local

Durham has two great alternatives to Black Friday (Nov 29), the first being Triangle Brewing’s Cask Festival starting at 3 pm at the brewery on Pearl Street. Look for 25 cask beers, all from NC brewers, food trucks and loads of entertainment. Advance tickets are $35 or pay $45 at the door/day of the fest. The second anti-Black Friday event is the Third Annual Smashfest at the Scrap Exchange beginning at 4 pm. Smashfest is “a fundraiser designed to question consumer culture by allowing customers to purchase breakable items, only to immediately smash them!” The outdoor event includes fire pits, outdoor movies and an opportunity to learn more about reuse.

The first of December starts the Twelve Days of Christmas at The Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill. The inn is festively decorated, including a Gingerbread Village Display, beautifully decorated trees, as well as events for kids and adults. See the complete season’s agenda at the website.

Last Friday Art Walk in Hillsborough would be a great way to get out and stretch your legs, get some fresh air and take in the artful scene in downtown. Make sure to stop in the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts for this year’s “The Art of Giving” opening reception, featuring art for the holiday season by the gallery’s 22 artists.

Shop Local

Last call today for pre-Thanksgiving wine and beer shopping (including newly arrive Beaujolais Nouveau) Need to find a local bottle shop near you? Welp, I’ve got a map just for that.

Itching to get your Christmas craft on? Then the Crafting weekend at Ornamentea (Nov 29 – Dec 1) is just what you need. Several “make and take” classes are scheduled for the weekend and throughout the month. If you have a crafter on your gift list, a gift certificate to the shop might make the perfect gift (so you can shop and craft).

This Saturday (Nov 30) is Small Business Saturday and the start of Sustain-a-Bull’s 4th annual Shop Independent Durham Week. Running for 8 days until Sunday, December 8th, Shop Independent Durham Week will include discounts, promotions, and special events at dozens of Sustain-a-Bull member businesses. Get deals on coffee beans at Bean Traders, discounts on cooking classes at Durham Spirits Co. and dozens of other specials (full details at the website). The variety of participating members makes it easy to shop local this holiday season.

And don’t forget about other Artful Shop-portunities this weekend (Rock and Shop) and next. You’ll get that gift list knocked out in no time.

On a personal note, just want to take a moment to wish a very Happy Thanksgiving to each and every one of you!
