Conventional wisdom advises that habits are ingrained after 21 days of repetition. If that theory holds true, then the eat~play~shop local habit requires time and effort to develop. Each month I’ll share “21 Days” of some event, place or organization in the Triangle, enabling (and I mean that in the most positive sense possible) your inner Localista to come out and join us. This month it’s all about locally crafted beverages of many persuasions: beer, wine, coffee, spirits and more.
The Big Boss brewery is sandwiched between Atlantic Avenue and Capital Boulevard, just a couple of miles north of downtown Raleigh, but it’s kind of been the epicenter for beer fans since opening in 2006. As they like to put it, they brew real beer for people who like different styles of beer… and they make quite a few different beers, usually around ten or so in the taproom on any given day. Look around most any grocery store or bottle shop and you’ll find a few Big Boss bottles in the mix. In fact, you can now find a mix of four different Big Boss beers (High Roller, Hells Belle, Blanco Diablo and Angry Angel) in a convenient 12-pack variety box. It’s so easy to like a local beer that’s so accessible, isn’t it?
If you venture to the brewery location on the second Saturday of each month, you can join in the free tour at 2 pm. In 30 minutes you’ll walk through the entire facility where you will learn about their process from start to finish. At the end of the tour you can sample up to three brews for $1 each. Big Boss is pretty well known for a couple of annual events. Each March on St. Patrick’s Day is the “Who’s Your Paddy” party and October’s “Casktoberfest” with one of the largest selections of cask ales assembled in NC. Big Boss always has something fun planned, like a Film Fest in partnership with Mission Valley Cinemas (and you’ll find more info about all the events on their website here). Plus, the taproom is open seven days a week, with pool tables, darts, ping pong and lots of good times (and usually a food truck outside in case you get hungry).
Though Big Boss is a well established NC brewery, they’re not resting on their laurels. They’ve got expansion plans and new brews on the horizon. The NC Beer Guys sat down with head brewer Brad Wynn and talked with him about those plans – you can watch the interview via NC Beer Guys “NC Beer Buzz” here. There’s some really interesting beer series coming out of Big Boss, so I encourage you to watch the video, take notes and sign up for the Big Boss newsletters to keep up to date on the latest brewery news. Oh, and stop by the taproom. Cheers!
