Conventional wisdom advises that habits are ingrained after 21 days of repetition. If that theory holds true, then the eat~play~shop local habit requires time and effort to develop. Each month I’ll share “21 Days” of some event, place or organization in the Triangle, enabling (and I mean that in the most positive sense possible) your inner Localista to come out and join us. This month it’s all about shopping at independent retailers, art galleries, craft fairs, coop and specialty markets, wine and bottle shops all around the Triangle.
Downtown Apex continues to be a thriving retail shopping destination in the southern part of Wake County, with a sporting goods store, fashion boutiques, a used book store, cute gift shops and a very popular craft beer store, all found along Salem Street. Who needs a shopping mall when you’ve got all that variety in a couple of city blocks? Not me. 😉
This is my favorite time of year to get outdoors and Apex Outfitter and Board Company carries all the gear and accessories outdoor enthusiasts need, including brands you want like Patagonia, North Face and Vans. You can expect knowledgeable and attentive service at AOBC to help select just the right item, and you can even rent a stand up paddle board (sort of like try it before you buy it).
Of course you can find fashions of a decidedly female persuasion at Sophie and Mollies or Fedora Boutique, along with delightful accessories at the Moon & Lola retail location (found in the Salem Promenade building). Sometimes home needs a little fashionable touch too and the one shop I always stop in is Lilly’s Home and Garden for the latest seasonal and holiday decor.
If shopping makes your thirsty then you’re in luck because The Beer Dispensary now has a larger, more centralized location on Salem Street. More than 700 bottles and cans are found on store shelves, along with a rotating selection of six drafts on tap, so you can raise a pint to your downtown Apex shopping spree success.
If you’re looking, you can find independent shops scattered around most any town, including Apex. I’ve created a Google Map that includes some of my favorite independent retailers in the Apex area and you can find it here. Did I miss one of your favorites? If so, let me know in the comments. In the meantime, make sure you save the map link to your mobile device of choice for quick reference when you’re out shopping in the area.
