Been Meaning to Explore Hillsborough? Do It This Weekend!

Sometimes the path less traveled is the most interesting. I know I don’t feel as though I visit the communities in Orange County nearly often enough, especially Hillsborough. This cool, small town will be bustling with activities this weekend. If you’ve been meaning to spend some quality time getting to know this historic corner of the Triangle this would be the weekend to do just that.

Tonight begins the 17th season of Last Fridays in downtown Hillsborough, an art walk and free concert series on the old courthouse lawn. From 6 to 9 pm explore the galleries and participating venues, dine at some really great restaurants along Churton Street, and treat yourself to something sweet from the local chocolate shop. Head northeast of town later in the evening, to Little River Park in Rougemont for a statewide star-watching party as part of the NC Science Festival.

Saturday morning explore the delightful Eno River Farmers Market under the pavilion at River Park, then stick around for the free River Park Concert featuring five bands, food and drink. If time allows, take a stroll along the Riverwalk Greenway and view the Eno River from a different perspective.

Sunday there are two opportunities to peek inside some unique, historic homes in Hillsborough. The house and grounds at Moorefields will be open to the public from 1 to 5 pm. You’ll have the chance to view artwork, sculpture, antiques and visit the old cemetery or walk down to the creek near the 230 year-old home. In another part of Hillsborough, Ayr Mount will be open for a special Earth Day Fair as part of the year-long bicentennial celebration of the Federal-era plantation house. Explore the grounds with the entire family as you hike Poet’s Walk.

Cap off the perfect weekend with Hillsborough’s hometown brewery as they host a very special fundraiser for start-up community radio station WHUP (104.7) at the Mystery Brewing Public House. The WHUPSTAGED! event begins at noon and continues until 7 pm, features six bands, a food truck and all that highly drinkable Mystery Brewing Beer.

That’s Hillsborough, a small town with big plans for your weekend.
